In the story “Mothers” it introduces a story about a female narrator and the narrator then falling in love with another female character. The narrator and their girlfriend are in a relationship but while in the relationship, the narrator gives a sigh of relief knowing that she can’t give birth or have the possibility of having a child because she and her partner are both females. Later on in the story the narrator and the girlfriend end up having a child together. I don’t think this is a story about grief because the narrator loses the child. I think this is much deeper than grief. It is much deeper because it connects with the real world. In today’s society most people believe that what makes people “parents” is having a female mother figure and a male father figure in the household. I think this belief is often common in today’s world because most people grew up with those standards. They also believe that if the child is a boy that there must be a male father figure in the household in order to teach them and guide them on how to become a man. If the child is a girl, there must be a female mother figure in the household to guide them and teach them how to become a woman. With these standards people believe that if you’re missing a parent then the child won’t grow up to understand what being man or woman is like because they never had one. This story aims at how society views lesbian couples, because they believe that since lesbiain couples want to have a child, that the child won’t properly grow up into the person it’s truly meant to be because there are flaws. I think Machado decided to make this story of a lesbian couple having a child and trying to accomplish nurturing the child’s needs despite caring about the standards society has put up for them.
